What is procrastination?
Procrastination is when we delay or put something off till a later time. The verb "to procrastinate" indeed means: "to defer action; delay: to procrastinate until An opening Is Lost" agreeing to English Dictionary. Fundamentally, procrastination is the aware and unconscious decision to do something at a later time instead of getting it done right away. Possibly you find that most of the time non-essential jobs are done instead of the more necessary ones. Procrastination is perilous and detrimental and affects your success in the long run. By procrastination you put in danger your career, your health and your personal life as it makes things more stressful and expensive. My tenant was procrastinating on doing her abortion, they already have 4 children and when she ultimately went to the hospital on her 5th month they told her it was too late and she was having twins! Her husband was not too excited about having 2 more children in expanding to 4 young ones in their family. Procrastination is Expensive! I go to court on multiple occasions and the most base presuppose citizen lose their houses and licenses is because of procrastination, not paying tickets, not taking care of violations, not showing up for court dates and hoping that all things will work out fine. It does not happen.
So, why do we procrastinate?
Human mentality is very easy as all decisions that we make are based on the estimate of pain or satisfaction we associate with them. The most pleasant tasks we do first, the ones we deem most enjoyable in the way we get them done, or how quick we can do them and how well we know about the task that will allow us to get it done quickly and indeed with No Pain. The tasks we procrastinate are regularly the ones that have some type of negative connotation to them. For example if you get a ticket, you might not be fond of paying for it right away and procrastinate it till later, and then you get busy and forget about it. It is painful to be dealing with tickets and fines, it is understandable, but procrastinating on getting that done might be more expensive in the long run than whatever else you are doing now. All of us have an emotional response to any task we are given, and learning our own response will help you to understand why you procrastinate and how to deal with it.
Dealing With Procrastination And Getting It Done:
1. administrate Yourself. The best time supervision tip I have ever had is to administrate Yourself. Everybody gets 24 hours in a day, and Everybody has things to do, but somehow some citizen are more productive and thriving than others. The presuppose is that they administrate themselves better: they are great at analyzing where they have to be, great at understanding the priorities and taking action. The second best tip in time supervision is to Know Yourself. It is prominent to understand yourself and know what motivates and drives you to be able to administrate yourself better. If you are procrastinating on a task, you need to know why and what are Your reasons. You also need to know what to do to motivate yourself to get it done. Some citizen work good under pressure, some citizen are self-starters, some citizen need love and attentiveness and for man to care about them and they need to hear from man other than themselves that they are doing good, some citizen like to eat and will do whatever for a good meal at the end of the day, some citizen like to vacation, some citizen love their family and would do whatever to spend more time with them.
2. Association. Relationship works very well in any environment. When you were a minuscule kid you were dreaming about inevitable things and that is what motivated you to do whatever and nothing was impossible. For example I wanted to get good grades because I was promised .00 for every "A" I would get, so my best week in school I had 24 "A"s, it was 6 a day, almost for every class we had that week...and .00 was a lot of money 10 years ago especially in Ukraine where I was born. My dad had to do his due diligence and call my teachers to verify that it was true and possible. I associated "money" with satisfaction and the way to have it was to study and get good grades. learning was not as prominent as getting good grades, or getting the "result", that's what indeed mattered. Just like in adult life, the process is great but the corollary is what matters and we have to take performance to get things done. When you think about a task, associate it with satisfaction or bonus yourself with something pleasant at the end. For example if you need to go to the gym, associate it with great health, high energy, and vitality. "Mens sana in corpore sano" in Latin means "healthy mind in wholesome body"- this is my personal Relationship with fitness. I was at the pool the other day and the lady in her mid-40s started a conversation, she worked out for 2 hours a day, every day, for already 2 weeks, and was losing a lot of unwanted weight. I asked her what her motivation was. She said: "I think about having great sex if I stay in shape". That made sense. That was her Relationship and that's what motivated her to go to the gym. If there is indeed nothing you can associate your task with, then bonus yourself after you get it done: go on vacation, movies, dinner, buy ice cream, or whatever makes you happy. If your task has to be consistent and continuous, and not "one time deal", you do have to find something you like about it otherwise you will be miserable every time you do it and won't do it efficiently.
3. Create Pressure. Some citizen wait till last minuscule to do something because then they need adrenalin rush and excitement. That feeling of "adrenalin rush" is just a feeling of anxiety and focus that we put on ourselves to get something done that can be created at any time or moment. You have the power to Create it, make yourself feel like the deadline is tomorrow even though it is a month from now. Get used to feeling this way every time you have an prominent thing to do. Put same pressure on others when you delegate your responsibilities. citizen might think you are crazy but at least things will get done. From my feel citizen who are regularly less responsible need to work under pressure and that's the only way they work, especially in building and any type of government agency. Unless you put a pressure on them and make it look like it's a big deal, they won't do it.
3. Prioritize. It is prominent to differentiate in the middle of Urgent and Important. prominent tasks are the ones that matter the most in the long run. Urgent tasks we have every day like getting lunch, taking car to a car wash, paying bills, mailing letters, picking up kids from school. They have to be done and they occupy most of our days but we can't go without them. Urgent tasks have to be thought about reviewed. For example bills can be paid online, somebody can wash your car while you are working on prominent task, you can have prominent company meeting and lunch at the same time, and you can dispose for your neighbors to pick up your kids from school if they live nearby. You will never have time if you are a busy person; you will only have it when You Make It. And we tend to make time for things that are less prominent and urgent, when in reality what matters the most are prominent tasks that corollary in the long term success.
3. Delegate It. Recognizing the presuppose to procrastinate is very important. Every time you face an prominent task, do a quick assessment. How much time will it take, is it feasible to do it now, do I lack any knowledge or skills to do it, can I do it fast and efficient. If you compare your task and the presuppose why you procrastinate is that you are not sure you will get it done right or productive enough, Delegate it. Have man with more knowledge and feel do it for you. For example, we buy tax lien certificates and do settlements on properties. In the state of Maryland one does not have to have an attorney to do it and I have all resources and knowledge to do it myself but I do not, simply because attorneys are more efficient. In expanding I eliminate liability when I have an attorney do it, it saves me time and it gets done. The other way to administrate procrastination is simply to write a "To Do" list and assign points to each task. Tasks that are more prominent (the ones we regularly procrastinate) must be assigned more points. If you feel like you do not have enough time to do everything, delegate easy tasks, like going shopping, walking the dog, doing laundry, anyone can do it in your household...or the worst case scenario you can hire a cleaning lady to do it once a week. These tasks are Not prominent and should not be done before indeed prominent things do. If you get overwhelmed with the estimate of work that needs to be done, Step Back and look at all things that is indeed important. There is 3Ds to time management: do it, delegate it or dump it, and analyzing what needs to be done and what is the best way to go about it is the most important. Doing it yourself is always easy but not always time efficient, so it might make sense to delegate. And if your schedule is indeed overwhelmed it might make sense to dump some of the things on your list or defer them till the weekend or when you have more time.
4. Do Two At Once & Keep Track Of Your Time. Another strategy is to do two things you want to achieve: one big and one small. You have to have a very clear vision and do things that lead to your long run success. So one big and one small does not mean you can go waste your day on doing a small task and then try to accomplish the big one and be done for the day. Picking 2 tasks makes it more fun and rewarding. You need to have a very clear idea of what needs to be done, how long it will take, and when it is going to be done. If it is your first time using a time plan you may want to keep a time log for a week or two first. A time log is a detailed record of how you spend your time each day. This will show you exactly how long dissimilar tasks and activities take. Then you can indeed plan your days accurately.
5. Focus And Interruptions. Getting all things prioritized and planned is a good start, now you need to protect planned time from all external interruptions and things that come up during the day. Working environment is very important. You need to have tools and resources to do your job efficiently and your working environment should have as minuscule interruptions as possible. This is estimate one presuppose why things do not get done. Many citizen have ambition, knowledge, skills and even persistence to start a great task and somewhere half the way they get distracted and the task never gets done. Remember, what matters is the result. If you can't get to the corollary you might not even waste your time going half way. Learn how to focus and get things done. Keys to success is not only to plan but also take action, and have the ambition, resources, persistence, knowledge, skills and potential to corollary through and get the results.
Stephen Covey, in his book, "Seven Habits of extremely productive People", summarized what it indeed takes to be successful:
Habit 1 - be proactive®
This is the potential to control one's environment, rather than have it control you, as is so often the case. Self determination, choice, and the power to conclude response to stimulus, conditions and circumstances
Habit 2 - begin with the end in mind®
Covey calls this the habit of personal leadership - prominent oneself that is, towards what you think your aims. By developing the habit of concentrating on relevant activities you will build a platform to avoid distractions and become more productive and successful.
Habit 3 - put first things first®
Covey calls this the habit of personal management. This is about organising and implementing activities in line with the aims established in habit 2. Covey says that habit 2 is the first, or thinking creation; habit 3 is the second, or physical creation. (See the section on time management.)
Habit 4 - think win-win®
Covey calls this the habit of interpersonal leadership, necessary because achievements are largely dependent on co-operative efforts with others. He says that win-win is based on the assumption that there is fullness for everyone, and that success follows a co-operative coming more simply than the confrontation of win-or-lose.
Habit 5 - seek first to understand and then to be understood®
One of the great maxims of the modern age. This is Covey's habit of communication, and it's extremely powerful. Covey helps to elucidate this in his easy analogy 'diagnose before you prescribe'. easy and effective, and necessary for developing and maintaining inevitable relationships in all aspects of life. Habit 6 - synergize®
Covey says this is the habit of creative co-operation - the principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, which implicitly lays down the challenge to see the good and inherent in the other person's contribution.
Habit 7 - grind the saw®
This is the habit of self renewal, says Covey, and it necessarily surrounds all the other habits, enabling and encouraging them to happen and grow. Covey interprets the self into four parts: the spiritual, mental, physical and the social/emotional, which all need feeding and developing.
Stephen Covey's Seven Habits are a easy set of rules for life - inter-related and synergistic, and yet each one superior and worthy of adopting and following in its own right. For many people, reading Covey's work, or listening to him speak, indeed changes their lives. This is superior stuff indeed and extremely recommended.
